Lottery Winner Stopped Breathing When She Realized She Had Won

by Laura De Giorgio on April 1, 2011

A High Point woman who won $500,000 in the North Carolina Education Lottery said she stopped breathing when she realized she had won.

Sondra Townsend, who has raised her three grandchildren on her own since her oldest daughter died in an accident, said the winnings will give her financial stability in the future.

“I scratched the prize and I stopped breathing at that point,” Townsend said. “No air coming in or going out.”

Townsend got $340,000 after taxes.

She bought the ticket at Daniel Brook Grocery on Henley Street in High Point.
